Have you ever felt like something was holding you back? Not only from achieving your goals and dreams, but even from just being yourself? Maybe you’ve had that nagging voice in the back of your mind telling you that you’re not good enough, that you’ll never succeed or that everyone will laugh at you. If that resonates with you, you’ve got a case of the self-limiting beliefs. The good news? It’s totally curable!
Understanding Self-Limiting Beliefs
In order to overcome your self-limiting beliefs, you need to first understand what they are. Basically, they are the negative thoughts and perceptions we hold about ourselves, which hold us back and prevent us from reaching our potential. Usually, they tie back to our past experiences, failures, rejections or conditioning. We internalize these beliefs so fully, that we end up hiding, avoiding new things or giving up quickly.
The Benefits of Overcoming Self-Limiting Beliefs
There are so many benefits of overcoming the beliefs that hold us back. By choosing to believe in ourselves and what we are truly capable of instead, we are more able to overcome challenges and grow into stronger and more powerful forces to be reckoned with. We end up with more opportunities and confidence. We’re able to push ourselves further, develop our skills even more, and see a lot more personal growth. No longer are we stuck in our comfort zones! This means broader perspectives and new experiences that we would otherwise never have even been aware of.
How to Overcome Self-Limiting Beliefs
There are a lot of different ways to start challenging your self-limiting beliefs, but this is my favorite method for getting started:
- Self-awareness: Start by identifying the self-limiting beliefs and how they are affecting you. Are there any recurring negative thoughts or patterns that hold you back?
- Questioning beliefs: Challenge the self-limiting beliefs by asking yourself, “Is this belief really true?” Write down everything you can think of that either supports or contradicts the belief and then take the time to analyze everything you’ve written. Usually, you’ll notice that the thoughts aren’t really based on fact or anything definite, but rather on assumptions or fear.
- Reframing: Go through and replace each of your self-limiting beliefs with empowering thoughts. By reframing the negative beliefs into positive affirmations that align with your goals, you’re able to create and reinforce the new mindset which will help you moving forward. Anytime you start to have doubts, remind yourself of this new affirmation and focus on that instead.
